- About this Coffee: The continent of Africa is at the center of genetic diversity for coffee, with Ethiopia considered the birthplace of the Arabica species. The majority of coffee production systems in Ethiopia are referred to as garden coffee systems. The farms are managed by smallholder producers who grow coffee alongside other crops, creating naturally shade-grown farming environments and maximizing the use of their small plots. Farm sizes in much of Ethiopia, including the village of Sakicha, typically range from 0.5 to 2 hectares. Local washing stations play a crucial role in Ethiopian coffee production. Producers bring their harvested coffee cherries to a centralized washing station, where they receive payment upon delivery, with premiums for ripe, red cherries. The coffee cherries are then sorted, processed, and dried under the sun.
